The alliance #rightsonboard has been created with the vocation to defend passengers’ rights and as a response to the airlines’ continuous attempts to change the legislation that protects the traveller. It is formed by companies from Germany, France, Austria, Denmark and Spain.
Under great pressure from the airlines, the European Council wants to propose legislative reforms in June 2015 relating to the rights of passengers in the event of flight delays and cancellations. The intention is to do this by modifying Regulation CE 261/2004.
Furthermore, the airlines hope that the majority of breakdowns will henceforth be considered to be cases of Force Majeure, something that would exonerate them from any liability towards passengers.
This modification would mean cutting back on 72% of passengers’ current rights.
According to a study carried out by the European Commission, at present airlines already fail to comply with the regulations pertaining to compensation for travellers on more than 96% of occasions and, in more than 50% of cases, they fail to meet basic rights to assistance.
Our mission is to protect passengers’ rights, to raise awareness of this problem and to try to slow down the legislative changes being proposed by the European Council, which would bring about a truly dreadful scenario for passengers throughout Europe.
Now it’s our turn. The time has come to defend our #rightsonboard.
